Equanimity

This portrait pays homage to Thich Nhat Hanh. He was a Vietnamese monastic, Buddhist Zen master, social activist, author of over 100 books, and more.

His teachings are profound yet plain. The consistent thread is a message of peace - accepting our present circumstances, feelings, and thoughts to be exactly as they are, with no resistance or judgment.

This impartial attitude of allowance may sound passive, yet he lived through the Vietnam war (until the 1960s when he was exiled for publishing articles in opposition to the war), he founded dozens of monasteries, was nominated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for the Nobel Peace Prize, organized thousands of meditation retreats all over the world, and he both earned degrees then later taught at many notable universities such as Princeton, Cornell, and Colombia.

His presence is a gentle reminder that our power resides in the present moment; when we hold our experiences with gentleness and compassion, we are more capable of moving through dark times.
